Unfortunately, no paper print can be guaranteed to stay exactly the same forever.

- Consider using UV-protective glass if displaying them.
- Most importantly, create a high-quality digital copy while the print is still clear.
That last point is perhaps the most important of all.
My Own Son's Handprints
When my son, Jackson, was stillborn in 2014, the hospital gave us his tiny handprints and footprints.
Today, more than twelve years later, they're still in good enough condition for me to engrave beautifully onto jewellery.
I'm incredibly grateful for that.

In fact, I never ask anyone to send me their original prints.
Those pieces of paper are irreplaceable and deserve to stay safely with you.
All I need is a clear photograph taken in good lighting.
A modern smartphone is usually more than capable of capturing all the detail I need to prepare your baby's handprint or footprint for engraving.
Your original prints never have to leave your home.
What If My Baby's Handprint Is Smudged or Includes Part of Their Arm?
Hospital handprints and footprints are rarely perfect.
Depending on how they were taken, the print may include part of your baby's wrist or arm, there may be areas where the ink didn't transfer evenly, or the print may appear slightly smudged.
This is completely normal and is often simply a result of the printing process.
When preparing your baby's handprint or footprint for engraving, I carefully isolate the hand or foot itself, removing anything outside the print—such as part of the arm, background marks or unwanted ink—unless you specifically ask for those details to be included in the final engraving.

Can Smudged or Faded Handprints Still Be Engraved?
In many cases, yes.
I use specialist image preparation techniques to enhance the detail that already exists within your baby's handprint or footprint. This often allows me to produce a beautifully detailed engraving, even from prints that are many years old.
However, I believe it's important to be honest about what is and isn't possible.
I can only engrave the detail that genuinely exists within your baby's print.
If a finger was never captured in the original handprint, or a section of the print is completely missing, I won't recreate or guess those details. The finished engraving will always be a faithful representation of what is actually present in your baby's unique handprint or footprint.
